The essential distinction is that this is manual redrawing, not an automatic conversion. Software auto-trace works by sampling pixel colours and guessing where boundaries fall, which produces artwork that looks acceptable on screen and fails under scrutiny: wobbling edges where a line should be straight, circles that are not quite round, hundreds of unnecessary anchor points, and stray fragments of background colour trapped inside the shapes. A vinyl cutter or CNC machine follows those flaws exactly, which is where the problem finally becomes visible.
I rebuild artwork by drawing it properly — straight lines as straight lines, circles as true circles, curves with the minimum number of anchor points needed to describe them accurately. The result scales from a business card to a building without softening, edits cleanly for anyone who works on it later, and satisfies suppliers who ask for EPS, SVG, AI or DXF. A machine cuts exactly what the file tells it to. Every flaw in the path becomes a flaw in the product.
Most people first encounter this problem as a refusal. The sign maker will not proceed without vector artwork. The embroiderer says the file cannot be digitised. The screen printer needs separations that a JPG cannot provide. The promotional supplier asks for EPS. In each case the business has a logo it has used for years and suddenly cannot use it for the thing it actually needs, usually with a deadline already agreed.
The tempting shortcut is running the image through an automatic trace, and it is genuinely tempting because the result looks fine on screen at normal size. Zoom in and the failure appears: edges that should be straight ripple gently, corners are rounded off, circles are slightly egg-shaped, and the file carries hundreds of redundant anchor points where a dozen would do. Colours are approximated into bands, leaving fragments of the old background trapped between shapes.
On screen you can get away with that. In production you cannot, because production is literal. A vinyl cutter traces every wobble with a blade. A CNC router follows every stray node. An embroidery machine converts each irregularity into stitches, and thread has no tolerance for fine noise. What looked like a small imperfection becomes a visible defect at full size, and by then you have paid for materials and machine time as well as the file.
Path economy matters for a second, less obvious reason: editability. Artwork with excessive anchor points is genuinely painful for the next person to work with. Recolouring, resizing a stroke or adjusting one element becomes an ordeal, so future changes cost more than they should — and the file frequently gets abandoned in favour of yet another rebuild. A cleanly drawn file with sensible node counts stays useful for years.
There is also a fidelity question worth naming. Redrawing means making judgement calls where the source is ambiguous — a blurred serif, a corner lost to compression artefacts, a colour that has shifted from repeated resaving. Guessing silently is how "vectorised" logos end up subtly wrong. Flagging those decisions and confirming them with you is what keeps the rebuilt mark genuinely faithful to the original.

What the vector file is destined for changes how it should be built. Embroidery needs generous minimum stroke weights and simplified detail, because thread cannot render hairlines. Vinyl cutting needs closed paths with no overlapping fragments, since the blade follows every one. Screen printing needs colours separated onto discrete layers. CNC and laser work often needs DXF with specific unit scaling. Signage needs true dimensions rather than arbitrary ones. Asking which of these applies before starting is the difference between a file that works and a file that has to be redone.
